Palo Alto County Conservation Board & Lost Island Prairie Wetland Nature Center

PALO ALTO COUNTY CONSERVATION BOARD:

Mission:  The purpose of the County Conservation Board is to conserve the natural resources of the county; to acquire, develop, maintain and make available public parks, preserves, recreation centers, wildlife and other conservation areas;  to provide adequate programs of public recreation;  to help educate local residents about the natural world.  The Palo Alto County Conservation Board manages over 2,200 acres of public forests, parks, marshes and prairies.  Habitat management includes tree planting, prairie and wetland restoration and management, wildlife food plots, fish stocking and the maintenance of nesting structures for ducks, geese, and songbirds.

LOST ISLAND PRAIRIE WETLAND NATURE CENTER:

Visit the Lost Island Nature Center located north of Ruthven, IA.  Found in the middle of Iowa's natural lakes region, the center is located in Lost Island-Huston County Park.  The regional facility serves as a site for public information, educational programs and interpretive displays.  We believe that the conservation of our natural resources tomorrow depends upon the education of our citizens today.  A naturalist conducts programs to teach and encourage children and adults to explore the natural world and experience nature first-hand.  Lost Island-Huston Park provides hiking, a wildlife observation blind, campground, picnic shelters and a swimming beach.
